Art does not arise solely from an individual gesture, but from an interweaving of presences, voices, and relationships. In shared creation, across video, music, film, and performance, the work takes shape within a lived environment and within a precise historical moment, with its wounds, its ambitions, and its hopes. To look at the work while also moving through its process means bringing the artist closer to the world, and the world closer to the artist.
Within the work of art converges what the artist sees, what he hopes for, what he fears; what he has understood, what moves him, and what holds him back. If an artist declares himself to be for peace, it does not at all follow that his work will be as well: it may be harsh, disturbing, tragic, even conflictual. Nor does it necessarily mean that he truly lives in peace, or knows how to grasp its full meaning.
It cannot be taken for granted that he clearly distinguishes victims from perpetrators, dreams from projects, sounds from noises, living silence from absence. And yet, through the work, he makes visible a portion of reality in which others may see themselves reflected.
It is precisely in that reflection that each person can measure himself and his own way of being in relation to the world.
The artist looks at the world as a system of which he is a node. The work is his way of making an impact, of being effective. To transform matter—visual, sonic, performative, perceptual—is his way of being with, for, and within the world.
