European Federalism, Altiero Spinelli, Europe and World in Peace

Presentation of the book *La mia solitaria fierezza* by Mario Leone, with Prof. Francesco Gui and the Hon. Federica Onori. A meticulous account of the life and thought of Altiero Spinelli.

At the launch of the book *La mia solitaria fierezza* (published by Atlantide) by Mario Leone, director of the “Altiero Spinelli Institute of Historical Studies”, the author will be joined by Francesco Gui, full professor of modern history at La Sapienza University, and the Hon. Federica Onori, Member of the Chamber of Deputies and member of the Committee on Foreign and European Affairs. Professor Manuela Dolfin will read excerpts from the book. An art exhibition inspired by the theme of peace will provide the backdrop to the event.

The book guides the reader through Altiero Spinelli’s life in exile, illustrating the ideas he developed during that period which led him ‘to the gates of the democratic city’, where he drafted the ‘Ventotene Manifesto’.

Towards the end of the 1930s, many people condemned by the Fascist regime spent their lives on the Pontine Islands. Among them was one of the founding fathers of a united Europe. Sentenced to more than 16 years in prison, confined first to the island of Ponza and later to Ventotene, Altiero Spinelli played a pivotal role in Italian and European history, becoming one of its key figures.
This work also brings to light the documents relating to his internment contained in Spinelli’s personal files, held at the State Archives in Latina
